IDW TMNT #44 Review

By April 10, 2015Reviews

As promised, I am going to discuss/review IDW’s TMNT issue #44. If you haven’t read this issue and don’t want to be spoiled, I suggest that you stop reading NOW.

Here is my story and ties to this issue. I have been a little behind on this series, like 3 issues behind. This was not by choice, just proof that life can get in the way of the TMNT. I decided to visit my local comic shop and picked up issues #42 and #43. I asked about #44, thinking perhaps it got pushed back due to it being nonexistent on the store shelves.

When I asked John, the owner of the comic shop, he just looked at me and said “Didn’t you hear about that issue?” As a huge TMNT fan, I was a bit embarrassed when I told him I had not. John went on to tell me that something huge happens but he was nice enough not to spoil it. The only copy that they had at the shop was behind the counter and it was cover RI with a $100 price tag. Issue #44 was going to have to wait until the second printing for me.

John ordered me a second print and said it should be out in two weeks. What happened next, would end my waiting. I got home from work one evening and saw a package sitting in my mailbox with my name on it from ComixZone.com. The only problem was that I did not order anything….

Well, somebody did and these are the exact photos of when I opened up the package! If seeing one copy of #44 wasn’t exciting enough…

I turned the book over to discover that cover B was also included in my mystery package! But how did this happen!? The book was sold out everywhere and only a few people knew that I even wanted it. I immediately texted my first suspect, my brother, and got a response back that read “Happy early Birthday Bear 🙂 love ya!” (Yes, my nickname is bear and yes he is the best brother in this whole entire world and yes this is an early and unexpected birthday gift as my birthday isn’t until the end of May).

I am excited just talking about it! So what happens in this issue that is so earth shattering?? Unfortunately, an Instagram picture popped up on my feed (not to mention me being tagged in a picture by my cousin on Facebook) and spoiled it for me before I could read what happened.

Let’s just cut to the chase. Donatello made a deal with the devil and it appears the devil one…for now. Donnie summoned the help of Shredder to take on Krang and the technodrome on Burnow Island. Shredder left his henchmen behind, with Donnie, as insurance just in case Don tried to double cross Shredder. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that Donnie didn’t expect this but it was too late to turn back.

Donatello transported Shredder and his army to Burnow Island. This was supposed to be a surprise attack, in Shredder’s eyes, but what was not known to Shredhead was that Krang was waiting for him and Donnie did indeed double cross Shredder in attempt to have the two forces destroy one another, thus eliminating all of the TMNT and company’s problems.

Word got out that it was a setup and Shredder instructed Bebop and Rocksteady to destroy the turtle! I know I skipped some stuff but honestly, who cares about other events in this issue besides the Donatello predicament?

Donatello put up a good fight with the help of Metalhead, who was being controlled by Harold, but in the end…B&R were just too powerful and Rocksteady did something nobody expected. He smashed Donnie’s shell with a sledgehammer and we are left with a supposed DEAD turtle.

I never expected this…IDW has been entertaining me for over 40 issues and have really done something that nobody else with property rights to this franchise would dare do…presumably kill off a turtle! This issue sold out first and second printings so I would say that IDW knew what they were doing.

Now the million dollar question. Is Donatello really dead!? Well, here is my take on this situation.

First off, this was well done by IDW. I know they will take some serious backlash but it was a shocking event that rattled TMNT fans and the internet world overall, with minimal if any warning signs. It is interesting to see something like this happen because we as fans normally know that the evil will fall and the good will overcome. It is a nice change of scenario for once and I am very intrigued to see where this story with Donatello leads.

Early leaks of the Free Comic Book day issue indicate that Donatello may not be dead, at least his brain and possibly vital organs. A simple Google search will show you what I am talking about.

However, if Donnie isn’t dead, how could he have survived such a massive blow? Tom Waltz recently did an interview and gave us a little hint…he said that there is nothing earthy that could save Donatello. The keyword being “earthy”. The TMNT universe is full of Alien technology.

Will Donatello become a Cyborg much like the Volume 3 IMAGE series? Some speculate that his mind may be transferred over to Metalhead. This could be possible if the Fugitoid has any say (see Fugitoid #1 or Fugitoid Micro-Series). Or maybe IDW has actually not planned on bringing Donatello back at all.

How will Donnie’s brothers react? Splinter? April? The next several issues should be very, very entertaining and are shaping up to be some great stories. I can see Raph taking it really hard and having his anger get the best of him. A great idea would be to have each turtle have their own few pages in the upcoming ongoing series indicating how they are dealing with the tragedy.

These answers and more should start to be revealed as early as issue #45, which is slated for an April 15th release date, pending no delays.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this situation. Please feel free to comment and tell me how you feel about possibly the biggest shock wave in TMNT history.

In the meantime, I will leave you with these….
