Throwback Thursday: My Collection

Recently, I have been flooding the Throwback Thursdays with TMNT figures. This is due to several reasons. First off, I love TMNT figures. Secondly, my collection is mostly TMNT figures due to that love. Today, I will give you fine folks a week off from my figures and show you something different.

I have been collecting trading cards ever since I can remember. My brother and I would get off the school bus and see my father standing there with both hands behind his back. We would each pick a hand and that is what pack of trading cards we would receive.

Once we got a little older, my uncle began taking us to the National Sports Collectors Convention. I guess you could say this obsession with cardboard of your favorite sport stars on them runs in the family! It was only natural that I would pick up something at these shows that combined two of my favorite things: TMNT and trading cards.

Here is a pack of the very first series of 1989 TMNT trading cards from The Topps Company. This set features 88 cards and 11 stickers from the original 1987 animated series. There are also 22 exclusive cards with cover art from the comic. Each pack contains 5 cards and 1 sticker. In addition, you can crunch on a stick of gum from 1989!!

I’ll be honest, I don’t know a ton about these cards but I am guessing that each pack contains one of the four turtles on the front as I have a Donatello and Leonardo pack.

Later in that same year, Topps released a 2nd series of the TMNT trading cards. This was a direct continuation of the first set, with an additional 88 cards and 11 stickers. The main difference between the two, as far as appearance goes, is that the boarder colors of the base cards are green in series 1 and black in series 2. The stickers also contain differences as they feature a yellow background in the first run and a blue background in the second series.

1990 saw the release of the tremendously popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie. Topps decided to release a set of cards, which recapped the film. There are 132 base cards in this set and 11 stickers. Each pack contains 9 movie cards and 1 sticker. This is the largest TMNT trading card set released by Topps.

The movie sequel, dudes!! During the following year, 1991, a sequel of the 1990 live action TMNT movie was released. This film was titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. Again, Topps released a set of trading cards featuring 99 base cards and 11 stickers. Each one of these packs contained 8 movie cards and 1 sticker.

There were several other trading card releases of the TMNT franchise, and I know that I have more of them somewhere, but these were just a few packs that I was able to locate in my collection. If I stumble across any opened packs, I will definitely post some pictures of the individual cards.

That wraps up this week’s Throwback Thursday: My collection! Thank you for reading.
