“The Foot Soldiers Are Revolting”

I recently discussed how I was watching every 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode in order. I stumbled upon an episode titled “The Foot Soldiers Are Revolting”. This episode was really cool so I am going to take the time to tell you more about it.

If you are a fan of the 1987 TMNT cartoon series, you probably recall how the Foot Soldiers have no personality. That is mainly due to the fact that the writers decided to make the Foot Clan robots so they could be blown up and no human being would be hurt (because it is a kids cartoon…as hard as that is to say).

This episode saw a Foot Soldier that actually had a personality and was more intelligent than anybody else involved in the show. Obviously I love the Foot Soldiers, as the name of my website speaks for itself, so it was great seeing one of its members stepping into the limelight. Here is how this all came to be.

First off, Bebop and Rocksteady were fired by Shredder as they have screwed up one too many times. These two are complete clowns in this series and sometimes it is a bit much. Krang and Shredder, in the Technodrome, decide to create an intelligent Foot Soldier named “Alpha One” to replace the recently canned duo. Bebop and Rocksteady are seen playing a video game during the process and this causes the computer to malfunction. The result, you ask? A more intelligent “Alpha One” than Krang and Shredder anticipated.

Alpha One can be seen in the picture above. The bigger the head, the bigger the brain, right??

Alpha One decides to go rogue and takes control of the Foot Clan. His plan is to send all of life on Earth to Dimension X so that he and his Foot Soldiers can have full control of Earth. The story of world or Earth domination is a common theme in this series.

Shredder and Krang, who were sent off in a life pod to Dimension X, hit a plasma storm (how convenient?) which causes them to have enough power to return to the Technodrome. When they arrive, they notice a bunch of people from Earth. Alpha One has been transporting them to the Technodrome to send them to Dimension X. Shredder and Krang begin transporting the citizens back to NYC.

Meanwhile, Bebop and Rocksteady are on Earth with Alpha One. Shredder’s henchmen decide to join forces with the TMNT (which is pretty neat to watch) and take on Alpha One. The Einstein of the Foot Clan becomes distracted by the people returning to Earth and the TMNT take advantage by sending Alpha One through the “Dimensional Displacement Device” to an unknown location. Bebop and Rocksteady are sent back to the Technodrome where they lie to Shredder and Krang taking all of the credit for defeating Alpha One.

The Rhino and Warthog are rehired and that sums things up. This story reminded me of an issue I read from the new TMNT Animated Adventures where one of the Footbots becomes a good guy and Mikey’s friend. It would make an interesting story if the TMNT had an alley working in the Foot Clan who could aid them in their fight against the evil group…oh wait isn’t that was Keno tried doing in TMNT II? 🙂 Fun stuff!
